Creating Awareness & Being the Witness

Awareness or being the witness creates choice in your life.

Having choice means being able to see How you do limiting and dysfunctional thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Seeing how you do your dysfunction equals the ability to change consciously.

Conscious change equals the ability to choose when and where you want to be happy, peaceful, and successful.

Result: Awareness is the key to constant peace, happiness, and success. This video shows you how to create awareness.

Also i cant get my mind out of new job.I am searching for new job although present job pays me well, i am not happy/ satisfied. Your exercise keeps me quiet for few seconds and i feel so great. I would be happy if someone can advise me on how to be optimist and to get new job.I cant visualize my new career too

Awareness takes practice. This whole video shows you how to get your “mind out”. Keep up the practice and start small. Soon enough it will become your natural way of being. Here’s the deal: You want a new job. There’s nothing wrong with that. I want things, too. However, you have two choices:

      1. You can want something and suffer over it because you don’t have it yet. This will end up more than likely you not getting what you want. 2. You can want something, be aware of why you want it, and let it be okay that you don’t have it yet. This is a power position because you are clear to take inspired action.

If you can become completely aware of your wants and desires, I guaranteed a lot of your wants and desires will drop away because you will start to see that life is perfectly okay the way it is for you. You will be happy with the present moment– that’s freedom. Then, ironically, you will receive more than you expected.

Keep watching the video series. A lot of your questions will be answered.

“…my mind quickly go(es) back to old ways..”

We are all creatures of habit. I do not know how old you are, but you have been programmed to think, act and feel a certain way for so many years. Keep practicing. Small, consistent daily practice yields big results. Read the book Psycho Cybernetic By Maxwell Maltz

It has been proven that human beings need at least 21 days to form a new habit. Start small and build from there.

Quick curve ball for you— it is the minds job to think. A powerful practice is to just notice you are thinking and embrace whatever thought it is. Most of us disown our thinking mind and thats what causes problems.

Meditation or quieting the mind creates awareness. Watching the mind, feelings, etc creates awareness. You are going to think through out the day. Thats the purpose of the mind. Meditation and awareness brings your thinking conscious, so you can choose how to feel and how to behave.

I downloaded Psycho Cybernetic By Maxwell Maltz, read it. Today i did not practice ur exercise till now. Also some days i am energy dynamo that i have ideas to change the world : ) and i feel so exaggerated to feel & see myself as mentor. Those days are my real days.(If you need any help, pls let me know.I like to shift my career.. )Few days its opposite. I do meditation too & my main worry when i turn negative. I cannot come out of it.Its is lasting for few days.Bcoz during that time i find myself as
    1) Impatient – Expecting results over nite
    2) Suspect – Cant belive people / place
    3) Confused – Dont know to set priority
    4) Failure fear
    5) Depressed of same results
    6) Disappointments
    7) Wishful thinking ……
    8) Cheats
    9) Shit 8 hours job (sorry, dont think i am pessimistic)
also i find that at home i feel all above symptoms. At office i am fully energtic, good team leader. Also my energy changes at home and at office alternatively. sometimes i am more happy person at home but viceversa at office.I dont find equal happiness / fun at both places.
I need to shut down my mind wandering & to redivert to productive plans. Will continue doing your practice.Once again,

I have just watched your video and as I lit up my 10th cigarette for today.. I literally began to gag as I watched my fingers bring that cigarette into my mouth. yuk. I put it out as soon as I almost choked on it.
Awareness is amazing. I then thought of how I recently achieved being able to get myself a job doing something that I never thought I’d do….after 15 years of being unemployed due to having my children in this time. I wrote an amazing resume in under an hour, suprised myself with so much self confidence in the interview and got the job. Now I am aware that during that process I was actually aware of who I believed I was and what I was saying and because I believed in my myself it actually uncovered feelings of happiness and subquently confidence. I already knew that the job was mine because I was aware of these things. This is cool stuff Nick…thanks.

      Lavinia–
Awareness in itself is transformation. I have taught and applied personal growth for over 5 years now in my life, did all this law of attraction stuff, and in the end I still struggled with areas of my life no matter how many goals I set.

Then, when I discovered awareness, things began to change very rapidly. I was able to see HOW I do what I do. Therefore, naturally what didn’t serve me dropped away. And since I could see the thoughts and beliefs that led to my actions, I could easily change them and act appropriately to get the results I wanted.

Keep up the excellent work! Using awareness is a gradual shift, so if things become challenging let that be okay. Awareness is becoming conscious. And to the ego that is its death. So, the ego or dysfunctional mind will do all it can to make itself known and come through the back door.

The key is to let that be okay and just notice your thoughts and feelings. You don’t want to push those in the basement and disown them with judgment, criticism, etc. That results in more dysfunction. The purpose of your mind is to think. So let it think and watch it think. From that perspective, you will always know what to do.

I use to have a lot of bad habits, especially around money. And when I brought awareness into the picture, those bad habits began to drop away. However, it took awhile to drop all the dysfunction in my financial life. Even though I practiced awareness, I sometimes still did the dysfunction–but with awareness. Then it wasn’t long until it completely went away and a more resourceful life filled in.

Sometimes the process takes awhile. And sometimes the dysfunction drops right away. I had both happen to me.

Keep it up! Your life will transform for the better.

    Hi Nick
Thank you so much for this video. It was very clear & well presented. This is the first time that I have heard awareness being presented this way & I liked it. Other teachers tell us all you need to do is just be,do& have internally, not so easy to do if you are not aware of what is going on internally (in comes awareness). I am going to use this now to see what is the internal taking about being in debt & be aware of it to change my life. Looking forward to watching your next video.

      Hi Susan,
I’m glad you found the video useful. When I first started personal growth, I did it because I had much dysfunction in my finances and relationships. So, I tried the law of attraction and the “secret” to goal setting, but I didn’t really have any good results or positive change.

However, when I brought awareness into the picture and started meditating, I began to see HOW I was doing the feelings and behaviors that led to my financial turmoil. In other words, I could see the connection between my thoughts and beliefs to my actions. Since I saw this connection, naturally the dysfunction started to drop away because you can’t do anything NON-resourceful to you, others, and the world when you are conscious.

Eckhart Tolle puts it beautifully- “It’s the quality of your consciousness right now that determines your future.” In other words, your future depends on how conscious you are right now. Awareness=being conscious.

      Keep up the good work!

      Hi Annie,
Yes you can incorporate meditation. In fact, meditation is another way to become more aware of your internal blueprint, who you really are, and the connection to how everything in some way is connected and from a greater whole.

I prefer a form of Zazen meditation. All you do is sit and focus on your breath. When thoughts arise or if you lose focus, you just notice the thoughts or that you lost focus and bring your attention back to your breath.

Or, you can just practice watching your thoughts and letting them go. And by letting them go I mean use a question, such as “Would I just let this be?” Or, “would I let this thought be.” Then be the witness or answer “yes”.

Here’s what I do: I meditate for about an hour each morning as described above. Then, about 2 or 3 times a day, for 15 minutes, I practice being the witness or observing my thoughts, feelings, and actions.

I have found small efforts, done day in and day, yield big results. When I first started, I only meditated for about 10 minutes. Then, I gradually became better. Over time, you naturally go back to your natural state-the witness- and this awareness stuff becomes automatic.

      Hope this helps!

We are always being warned about people who say “Trust me”. While one hand may be handing out advice and gifts, we wonder about the one we can’t see that may be holding the knife! I agree that life should be simpler. So many people are on the Internet saying very much what you are saying. So I wonder if you have any new insights. I assume I can unsubscribe at any time.

      Hi George,
I appreciate your concerns. Yes, if you want you can unsubscribe or feel free to come and go as you please.

A lot of my material and speaking is “off the cuff”, meaning that I don’t plan anything or script it out. So, I may use the word trust me, though I don’t have a negative association with it.

All in all, the word “trust me” is just a word that has no meaning except for the meaning you give it. In fact, you could even practice the awareness principle when someone says “trust me”. Maybe there’s past trauma there? Almost all trauma in life comes from unconsciously taking on the position that the world is a dangerous place. This is nobody’s fault because when we were young we didn’t have the mental filters developed yet to decide for ourselves.

So, when you hear the “trust me”, watch your thoughts and feelings. How do you feel? Where is that feeling in your body? Watch and see what your mind does. Over time, with awareness, you will see what the negative or positive connection is between your beliefs/thoughts and the word “trust me”.

The wisdom of the ages has been around since time began. So the insights are already within you. I’m just trying to facilitate those insights into practicality and daily living.

      Take care!

I can relate…a few years ago I went through some massive upheaval. It effected everything in my life at that time. However, eventually I just let it be okay and I broke on through the other side.

The way to deal with upheaval is to let whatever happens be okay because upheaval is the natural process of chaos and reorganization.

Thank you this was very enlightening. Sometimes we perhaps we think we know something only to find out later we did not really know or understand. From my own experience Becoming Aware of our inner most thoughts and feeling that we have become so a custom to is the Key to Awakening. The beautiful part is once we ourselves are awake then we can work to help others in our lives become awake or aware but not before.

My problem is alcohol and I can’t see how I am about to watch myself consciously when becoming drunk…my mind is all blurred with wine. How do I go about this? I do want to change this dysfunctional behaviour, but aparently not enough….

    Reply

    1. admin’s avatar

      Caroline,
I agree…that once past a certain drinking point, the awareness is probably more difficult. Here’s the key– when you notice that you want to pick up a drink or you feel like drinking or you think about drinking, just notice that thought or feeling. Say, “Interesting…there I am thinking (or feeling) about drinking. How do I do this?”

Then, just watch your mind and your feelings. Identify where the feeling is in your body. Try to watch the thoughts, beliefs, or feelings that make you want to pick up a drink. Then, if you go and follow through with the drink, watch your mind as you drink. Become very curious about your feelings and thoughts while you drink.

As you start watching, before the actual drinking takes place, over time you will begin to notice what past trauma, beliefs, or thoughts that trigger you to drinking alcohol.

If you keep this level of awareness and are completely present with your feelings and thoughts about drinking, then you cannot and will not continue drinking. It doesn’t serve you and since you are not identified with it anymore, you don’t need it.

Now, here’s what makes this process potentially long and tedious in the beginning. It’s possible that you could have past unconscious trauma. Depending on the level of trauma, the more challenging it could be dissolving dysfunctional behaviors in the beginning.

However, no matter how big the price to pay is for this type of change, remember that you are also paying a price to stay the same.

Keep up the good work with awareness.

      Hope this helps!

Great news Geeta…the ego mind sees awareness and presence as it death. So it will do its damnedest to make itself known. This could potentially become a problem because then it becomes disowned. The purpose of awareness is not to disown states of mind inside of you. Awareness and presence are about embracing and including the states/aspects of you. Observe, acknowledge, and love the thoughts and feelings you have. That is the essence of meditation and makes you a very functional person.

I talk about this later on.

I have been cognizant of the need to be aware in the moment for some time now, however I used to observe my dysfunction and then try to will myself to change. When this didn’t work, I would get depressed and backslide into guilt and feelings of inadequacy that further complicated my efforts. I appreciate your presentation of a truth I had heard many times but had failed to realize. I do not have to force change upon myself. Great video. By becoming the observer, you change your perspective. Then, it’s just a fact of your life, not what you are. In the words of Dr. Wayne Dyer: when you change the way you look at something, the thing you look at changes. In this case, it becomes manageable because it’s a fact, not a problem.

watching your video, so simply put: really helping to streamline this potentially daunting and frustrating journey of rectifying years of bad mental habits. it is fearless when you put it like that, i too have read and searched and practiced… and only when you remove the effort (as in the “trying”) it flows. a paradox almost! beautiful.. anyway, as im attempting to be the observer more and more frequently, i observed and am still observing my anxiety as i post this comment. It always happens, when i have something that im passionate about to say, my heart races, my chest tightens… and i think i fear i wont be heard… or rather express fully… or perhaps that people arent interested in what i have to say.. and thus, i often dont post!! this is an aha moment, because i realise also that in wanting to express fully, i express too much! ( often waffling) i now feel lighter, observing my anxiety and false beliefs. i see that actually i dont need to say anything… i will practice this.. and still post this.. although not sure what, if any point i have.. aside from sharing an instant.. no simultaneous even, result of watching this video..i am now curious about this anxiety.. not scared. i know now i can unravel this knot of misconception sooner! endless grattitude:-)

      Laura,

Awareness leaves identification with the “self” and all of its concepts, worries, pain, and suffering. Awareness strengthens your relationship with the ever-present mind, the limitless mind that is already perfect and what is. Seems like you discovered that realization.

Do you know how many years it takes for people who practice meditation to realize this? Many. Yet, we really don’t have to meditate. We don’t have to do anything to realize our freedom, compassion, and who we really are because you and I (we) are already all of IT. Meditation, awareness, and any other observation practice gives us a deeper appreciation for the perfection/compassion we already have.

Thank you Nick. yes, its like a switch… i can draw parallels to when i successfully gave up smoking 7 years ago. i had tried frequently, once even made a year… then one day i woke up, no plan to stop involved, and just didnt want to smoke anymore. I was done, it didnt serve me.

the mind can be stubborn however, persistent! and even though the realization of awareness has been switched on, staying in the moment takes practice. meditation and other practices really are invaluable in helping to retrain and sustain the mind. for me anyway, i have, if i permit it, a very chatty mind.. so i welcome all tools!

Good stuff! I know what you mean…I made a phone call yesterday to someone who really has mastered this material and my heart was racing so fast I thought it was going to explode. Then, I noticed that feeling and I could see how I was doing that “nervousness”. I realized it was just a feeling and went through with the call. I was still nervous, but it was a good nervousness and because I was aware, I didn’t sabotage myself in lack of confidence.

Another good point…Awareness helps you distinguish when to act and when not to.

      Take care,
      Nick

PS. Laura, they call chatty mind “monkey mind”. Everyone has it and the key is to let the mind do its thing- think. Even if its a bad thought, let it be okay. Its just a thought, not who you are. As long as you realize that you have this thought, you are not it, so no worries :)

Really enjoyed the video. Your narration was good as it did not feel like it was just read off a paper. I have been practicing witnessing and it does work that i am sure….just a challenge sometimes. My issues seem to be mostly sub conscience. Thank you for sharing this information.

Note: my issues are manifesting as physical. I have one big one i have not been able to conquer as of yet. Can you just witness or do you have to know why you are feeling and experiencing it? Where it came from?

    Reply

    1. admin’s avatar

Trying to know why you are feeling and experiencing and trying to figure out where it came from is using the mind as analyzing. This is not witnessing. You do not have to know anything. If you just watch how your mind functions in the dysfunctional area of life that you have, as a by-product of watching, you will understand how you create those poor results.

Then, when the moment arises, you cannot do the dysfunction.

Here’s an example. A lot of people know they over-eat or have weight problems. And, they analyze the situation thinking, “Well, the cause of me being overweight is because I don’t eat right and do not exercise.” They know this. However, they don’t change. Why?

Because they are thinking conceptually that the cause of their problem is over-eating and not exercising. They are not witnessing the internal representations that they make because it’s the IRs that cause them to take certain action or no action. This is shown in video 2.

Once you see the IRs that you make that lead to a certain action, they automatically get categorized as “not believable” if they do not serve you. Then, once you have this awareness, you can use the mind effectively and very quickly to attract the results you want by focusing on the positive outcome of your goal. This is shown in video 3.

      Hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much for this video, only the other day I asked myself why won’t you give up smoking. This is great and I believe an answer to my prayers. Been struggling a lot recently due to a major loss in my life whilst trying to accept what I cannot control – this has made me realise that I do get too attached to people and things in my life. Although my Mum is someone I will always miss, just have to find a way to let go and accept she is in a better place now and wants me to succeed in life. This has helped to awaken my broken spirit and I will use it to help me get to through.

Really appreciate how concise and easy it was to follow the video and practicising right now. Looking forward to your next video. Thank you so much.

      Hi Angela,

I appreciate your comment. All spiritual teachers and mystics ultimately help people realize two things: 1. Attachment is suffering and 2. You are never missing anything and are “one.” No matter how hard we try, we will never be completely unattached. In fact, trying to become unattached is a Koan Zen Masters use for their students. We live in this physical world of impermanence. All we can do is deepen our understanding about ourselves, others, and world, and that leads to freedom.

I can understand your loss and have been through that situation. Let me give you a gift that someone has given to me before:

      1. Take out a piece of paper and write down all of the qualities (separate lines) that you love about your mom. This may be a lengthy list.
      2. Next to each quality about your mom, write the initials of someone you know, who is alive, that has whatever quality you are looking at.
      3. After you complete the whole exercise ( #1 and #2) what do you realize?

Feel free to post back here again about this topic once you complete number 3.

You do not have to let go of your mom, you just have to let whatever happened be. Accept the fact, but always keep her in your heart and the exercise above helps you do that.

Now, I’m not telling you when or right now to get over her, no. Levels of acceptance are different for people. Only you will know if it is “dysfunctional non-acceptance” compared to the natural human process of grievance.

      I hope this helps

      Peace and love,
      Nick

    Hi Nick,
I have read tons of self improvement stuff over the years, but nothing hit me
like this video, it definitely is an eureka moment. I once heard someone saying this, it’s a bit of NLP, I think it was Chris Howard, but the way you explained it made it clear to me, and I have to thank you for it. I also can see your honesty when you state how your life was not too long ago, and how you overcame obstacles and limitations. Lately I’ve been doing meditation, and for some reason Theta Meditation is what appeals to me, I’m just getting my feet wet. I’d like to know what’s your take on Theta Meditation.
    Best Vibes,
    Sergio

      Hi Sergio,
Thanks for your great comments! I appreciate them. As far as Theta Meditation goes…I have never done specific theta meditation where the goal is solely about theta states. I have played with binaural beats as meditation, and I do think they accelerate the traditional meditation process. However, use audio technology with caution.

Here’s why: using binaural beats, in my opinion, only works if you have a program that continually pushes your threshold with different carrier frequencies through out the stages of going into alpha, theta, and delta brain waves.

It’s important to look at carrier frequencies, those are what push your threshold to grow in awareness. Most binaural programs out there put you in a theta state, but after a while your brain makes all of the “connections” needed to deal with being over your threshold. Therefore, the current binaural program becomes ineffective and no growth happens.

For example, if you started training for a marathon today, at some point running one mile will become easy and not push your threshold to grow and run farther. So, you run two miles, then three miles, then six miles, and so on, until you become this running specimen :)

Binaural beats and audio technology meditation is the same way…you need to constantly push your threshold to receive on-going results of awareness and seeing reality more for what it is.

All meditation does, traditional or with technology, is help you create distance from yourself, so you can observe your mind and the world without attachment and creating identities. This observing state of awareness discovers who you really are, thus leading to peace, joy, and contentment; transcending all suffering.

The paradox is…you are already it and completely whole and this point of awareness. You don’t have to practice or do anything to get there. Have fun thinking about that :)

Let me know if you have any other questions…I enjoyed this conversation :)

    Hi Nick,
Your advice on theta makes sense, as I enrolled the help of a brainwave entrainment MP3 recording, The Zapper by Dick Sutphen to be more exact.
I’m experimenting with different kinds, and Zazen has gotten me curious,
the only thing is that in one website it’s cited as a practice for meditation
practitioners that are a bit more stable and advanced in their practices.
Someone has lent me the book, The One Command, I know that it’s com-
pletely different from what you practice and advice, do you have an opinion
about it? I appreciate your input, and the way you put things is very simple, it’s surely a breath of fresh air, Upgrade my Reality makes more and more sense, now, what can you tell me about your Money Attractor Program? That was long, and thank you again.
    Peace

      Sergio,
The One Command is something I am not familiar with. However, I will look into it and possibly add it to my reading list.

As far as Zazen goes… The essence of the practice is to sit on a meditation cushion and become intensely focus on your breath moving in and out of your body. When your attention is diverted away from your breath and you start thinking, notice that you are thinking and bring your attention back to your breath.

It doesn’t matter how much you think or how often, as long as you notice yourself thinking you are doing the meditation correctly.

After much practice, I’m talking possibly years, you will be able to focus so intensely for long periods of time that your brain waves will move through the alpha, theta, and delta brain wave states.

    Hi Nick,
Thanks you so much for the video on awareness. I have used the observer approach to bring myself into the present moment, and when my buttons are pushed. However I haven’t used it in the way you suggest for other things like wanting to loose weight, or other dysfunctional habits.

I will now be using it for everything!

    With gratitude,
    Brenda
